Rainy season has officially started! A big silver lining of spring showers is that I get to wear one of my favorite pieces of clothing - a trench. Known for being figure-flattering, and guaranteed to add sophistication to almost any outfit, a good trench-coat is truly a spring wardrobe essential. Although I prefer to have a small wardrobe and am not normally tempted to buy several of any style,  I do have to exercise some serious self-control when it comes to trench-coats.

RAINCOAT: VIA SPIGA now on SALE or a little more pricey HERE | BAG: FLYNN (sold out but I also really love these two red ones HERE and HERE) | SKIRT: HINGE, similar HERE | WHITE PUMPS: CHARLES DAVID via NORDSTROM | UMBRELLA: HUNTER

If, like me, you lean towards a small wardrobe I think two is a good number of trench coats to own. I recommend going with one in a classic color, meaning whatever variation of khaki, tan, stone or beige works best on your skin-tone. And a second in a high-impact color that makes you happy and works with the rest of your wardrobe.

I chose red because it works with many color palettes, the obvious ones being black, white, navy, camel and grey. Less obvious but also a great pairing is red and blue which you can see here in my last post, or red and olive, which I'll probably be wearing and posting soon. I also love tone-on-tone looks for their graphic impact, hence the red bag and lips. Matching the shades up can be tricky but once you do, you have a highly efficient wardrobe where pieces can easily be mixed, matched and styled in different ways.

The little red bag I'm carrying here has gotten so much wear since I bought it a few weeks ago. It's made by a company that I just recently discovered and a brand that's not yet very popular, which I love. I own two Flynn bags and love their clean lines and elegant structure with minimal branding. Unfortunately this particular design is now sold out in both colors since I first posted it last week! Since a little red bag is a great addition to any wardrobe, I've linked two others that I really love above. The first is great for casual wear, coffee, brunch, that sort of thing, while the second also doubles as a great work bag.

I also just got this umbrella and totally love it. Clearly (no pun intended), it goes with everything and the quality is excellent. I love how deep and solid it is. I hate when umbrellas really only cover the crown of your head with the edges starting to droop as the rain comes down hard. This one comes down around my shoulders, stays unflappable and keeps everything nice and dry. Heavenly and totally worth the money for around $50.

The polka-dot black & white skirt is a cute flirty piece I picked up a while back and provides a soft counterpoint to the bold red of the coat and bag. I finished the look with white pumps, which at the risk of sounding repetitive, is another item I think no spring wardrobe should be without. I was initially eyeing the white Manolo version but went with these much more wallet-friendly ones instead.

STYLE TIPS

If you aren't sure how to make a super vivid color look timeless versus too loud or trendy, here are 3 no-fail ways:

1. Choose a style that's classic to balance out brightness. For example, a classic style like a trench-coat tends to look more polished and elegant than a bright red cut-out mini-dress.

2. Match one or more accessories very closely to the largest amount of bright color you're wearing - keeping things tonal will make the outfit less busy and more chic.

3. Keep the rest out of the outfit refined in style and color. For example, I only introduced 2 other colors, both very neutral - black and white.

If you're looking for a trench-coat or rain-coat, I've linked a few below that I love.

Thanks so much for reading and have a wonderful week!
