MAXI DRESS - DREAMING OF VACATION

One of my favorite things to do on the weekend is to explore some of the quaint New England towns that surround Boston. This past weekend we headed to Marblehead, a small seaside town with rocky beaches, pretty lighthouses and lots of charm. There's really nothing quite as restorative for me as sitting on a bench in the sun, looking out at the sparkling water and not looking at my phone. It got me dreaming about a warm vacation somewhere (which I have coming up in a few weeks yay!). One item I always pack when I go on vacation is a maxi dress. For me, a maxi dress styled with statement earrings and pretty footwear is the epitome of relaxation and subtle glamor.

DRESS: ZARA (no longer available online) but super similar HERE or HERE | CROSS-BODY BAG: BANANA REPUBLIC (now on sale for under $100!) | NUDE PUMPS: BANANA REPUBLIC | EARRINGS: OLD (similar HERE or HERE)

They're also one of my favorite things to wear on the weekend because they're just so effortless, feminine and comfortable. I actually like them across all seasons, particularly the long-sleeved variety because they work in the depths of winter as well as the height of summer. Nothing will keep you as cool and protected from the sun as a long-sleeved maxi in a light material - seriously.

In warmer weather I tend to style my maxi dresses with strappy shoes or jeweled flats, and statement jewelry. Or if it's cooler I add a jacket and booties - easy formula. I styled the dress both ways here so you can see both. Scroll all the way to the bottom to see the dress with the leather jacket.

I love this Zara dress because they really nailed giving it a gentle A-line that's flowy and has movement yet cut close enough to the body to not overwhelm petite frames. I also love the colors - I think my Indian heritage totally called out to me on this one and the dress caught my eye right away. It's different from other maxis you tend to see this time of year when retailers put out tons of florals, pastels and brighter colors for spring. This one is more muted and earthy with teals, blues and browns. You need richer jewel toned accessories to bring out its full potential but the payoff is good:)

Overall the dress is super petite-friendly. Shoulders, sleeve-length and hem-length were all perfect for me - always nice when that happens. I've had good luck with Zara this year so I make sure I stay on top of their new arrivals. The dress is unlined but I didn't have any problems with it being see-through, even with direct sun on it.

The style of this particular maxi is similar to an Indian garment called a "salwaar kameez" which is basically a long flowy tunic worn over skinny or wide legged pants. It's so similar that I thought a little bit of fusion styling would be fun and pulled out the pair of earrings you see, which I rarely get to wear because they're a little elaborate for most of my other outfits. These are straight from India so I had a tough time finding a match online but in my search I found a couple of other really pretty ones that I've linked for you.

I paired the dress with two of my new purchases from Banana Republic. I bought this dark wine colored saddlebag, which is now on SALE for under $100 - crazy good price for this bag. This saddlebag is an unusual color in smooth vachetta leather - very nicely constructed and relatively roomy inside. It's quite a bit bigger than a micro-bag or the Prada camera bag that you've seen on me many times, but still small enough to not weigh you down. Just a note that this bag doesn't have any pockets or compartments inside, only card slots. This works fine for me but if you're looking for something with more organization features then this isn't the bag for you.

I also picked up a pair of nude lace-up pumps. The pumps are a must-have for Spring. I searched high and low for a pair of nude pumps that are stylish, comfortable, and that could pair well with the season's light neutral hues and this is the shoe! I've walked quite a bit in them already and was comfortable in them in just a few hours despite having a wider foot. It runs true to size, maybe a teeny bit on the long side. I normally take a 5.5 and  I have a tiny bit of room in the shoe that is easily fixed with a foot petal. If you're not familiar with foot petals I feel compelled to share that for me they really help alleviate pressure on the balls of my feet. Seriously, they really help.

Do maxi dresses have a place in your travel or vacation bag? Please post in the comments section below - I'd love to hear from you!

I'm off to begin some serious vacation planning, particularly as Boston is about to get snow. Again. And then tons of rain, so I better start putting together those rainy day outfits too.

Wishing you all a happy Friday and a relaxing weekend. Thanks so much for reading and see you back next week!
